Melbourne Connect’ $425m Construction Commences

The project is developed by the University of Melbourne, enlisting a consortium led by Lendlease for the construction.

Melbourne Connect will be a home to the ‘highest calibre research, industry, higher-degree students and other elite thinkers’ according to UniMelb.

It will include the addition of Science Gallery Melbourne, accommodation for 500 students, co-working and commercial office space, a fabrication laboratory retail, public spaces and childcare.

The building and it’s construction will see the creation of over 3,000 direct jobs, as well as over 5,000 indirect jobs.

The current site is the former site of Royal Women’s Hospital in Carlton. The building will maintain the heritage and history of the site, creating a new open, light and modern precinct.

Woods Bagot won the design for the project in 2016 and have been selected for the project, lead by Hazel Porter.  Aspects of the precinct will employ the use of cross-laminated timber to create a sense sustainability, strength and aesthetic.

We’ve already seen the benefits and rise of using timber in construction.

“Long championed by Lendlease, its benefits translate to safer working environments, improved quality and faster construction time on site due to prefabrication.” says Porter.

GIC, Spotless and Urbanest are also partnering in delivering the project. The Melbourne Connect innovation precinct has been shortlisted in the 2018 Architecture Festival awards. The award winners will be announced at the end of this month in Amsterdam.
