Little Projects announced yesterday that Hickory has been awarded the $105 million build contract for its new hotel in Melbourne’s CBD.
The Hyatt Centric-branded hotel will be the chain’s Melbourne debut, designed by Architectus. The finished project will offer 278 guest rooms, said to reflect the location’s surrounds and heritage.
“We look forward to partnering with Hickory again as we unveil Melbourne’s first Hyatt Centric Hotel in 2021, a hotel which is set to capture the spirit of Melbourne and further adds to the city’s burgeoning hotel sector,” said Little Projects Construction Director, Paris Lechte.
Hickory has previously worked with Little Projects to deliver a number of projects, including ILK South Yarra which received an UDIA Award for Best High Density Development in 2014.
Lechte said that Hickory’s experience in the sector was a factor in their appointment. Hickory is currently building Chadstone’s $130 million flagship hotel, designed by Bates Smart, which has created 1,250 construction jobs.
“Hickory is at the forefront of innovative construction methodology and has patented its own building technology, which allows them to maximise productivity, with quality and safety on site of paramount importance,” he added.
The site at Downie street was first purchased by Little Projects in 2017 for $28.6 million. The existing permit was amended to allow for a hotel, gaining approval in April of last year.
Construction will commence in the coming months with expected completion in 2021. The hotel design features a six-level podium backing onto a 20-storey glass tower, the rooftop of which will offer a bar to maximise the site’s panoramic views of the Yarra River and Southbank precinct.
“Hyatt Centric Melbourne is designed to reflect Melbourne’s cosmopolitan vibe, vibrant street culture and rich history, and inspire guests to venture out and explore the neighbourhood,” said Robert Dawson, Hyatt’s Pacific area vice manager.
